5 Traditional Dishes You Must Try in Slovakia

When we travel to a new country, we always look forward to trying its traditional cuisine. That’s why we always research the national dishes and traditional foods of the country beforehand. For us, a trip is only complete when we’ve tasted the local specialties—and that’s especially true for the delicious cuisine of Slovakia.

Slovak food culture has been influenced by its Central European neighbors as well as the Balkans, creating a unique culinary experience.

From hearty stews to delightful desserts, there’s something for everyone. Here are 5 traditional dishes you absolutely must try when visiting Slovakia.

1. Barley Soup (Krupičková Polievka)

This soup is typically made with beef or pork but can also be vegetarian. It’s a thick soup, perfect for a winter meal. Barley soup is usually served with dumplings and capers, and sometimes mushrooms are added for extra flavor.

2. Bryndza Dumplings (Bryndzové Halušky)

These are potato dumplings that are very popular in Slovakia and other Central European countries. They are traditionally made with sheep’s cheese (bryndza), which gives them their distinctive flavor. Bryndza dumplings are often served with sauerkraut or topped with bacon and onions.
