1. The History of Neuschwanstein Castle

Neuschwanstein Castle was built in the 19th century by King Ludwig II of Bavaria. Construction began in 1869 and it was intended as a retreat for the royal dreamer, inspired by medieval castles and the Romantic era. Ludwig II wanted to create a world at Neuschwanstein that matched the legends and myths of his time.

Although the castle was never fully completed, it is now a symbol of romantic architecture and one of the most famous landmarks in Germany. Ludwig II himself only lived in the castle for a few months before he died under mysterious circumstances in 1886. Since then, Neuschwanstein Castle has attracted millions of visitors each year and even served as inspiration for Disney's fairytale castle.

Neuschwanstein Castle is located in Schwangau in the Allgäu region and is one of the top tourist highlights in Bavaria.

2. Travel Preparation

Before heading to the king’s castle, there are a few things you should consider. Good planning helps you get the most out of your visit and avoid long waiting times.

Book Tickets in Advance

Neuschwanstein Castle is a very popular destination, so we highly recommend booking your ticket online in advance. This not only secures your entry but also helps you avoid long lines on site.

Ideally, you should buy your ticket a few weeks in advance, as they often sell out.

The Right Clothing for Neuschwanstein Castle

The weather in the Bavarian Alps can change quickly. Even in summer, you should bring a light jacket and comfortable shoes, as it can get cool during hikes or inside the castle.

Schloss Neuschwanstein liegt in der Nähe von Füssen, etwa zwei Stunden südlich von München. Du hast verschiedene Möglichkeiten, dorthin zu gelangen:

By Car

If you’re traveling by car, there are several parking lots available. From there, you can reach the castle either on foot, by shuttle bus, or via a romantic horse-drawn carriage ride.

By Train from Munich

Taking the train from Munich to Füssen is also a good option. From Füssen, a bus takes you directly to the ticket center in Hohenschwangau.Falls du mit dem Auto anreist, stehen dir mehrere Parkplätze zur Verfügung. Von dort aus gelangst du entweder zu Fuß, mit dem Shuttle-Bus oder einer romantischen Kutschfahrt zum Schloss.

4. Entrance and Tours

The fairytale Neuschwanstein Castle can only be visited as part of a guided tour. Tours are available in various languages and provide fascinating insights into the history and architecture of Neuschwanstein Castle.

Our Recommendation: Book the first tour in the morning to avoid the crowds and enjoy the castle in peace.

5. Exploring the Castle

The interiors of Neuschwanstein Castle are just as impressive as the exterior. During the tour, you’ll visit magnificent halls, royal chambers, and learn more about the life of King Ludwig II, who built this castle.

Around the fairytale Neuschwanstein Castle, there are numerous hiking trails and viewpoints that offer spectacular views of the castle and the surrounding landscape.

Here are some of our favorites:

View from the Marienbrücke

The Marienbrücke is the most famous viewpoint and offers a fantastic view of the castle. The walk there is a short hike from the castle and is absolutely worth it.

Tegelberg

For those who are more active, we recommend the climb to Tegelberg. From here, you have a wide view over the Bavarian Alps and can admire the castle from a bird's eye view. The climb takes about 2.5 hours and is manageable.

Pöllatschlucht

The Pöllatschlucht is located in the immediate vicinity of the famous Neuschwanstein Castle. However, due to weather conditions, it is often closed for safety reasons, so be sure to check in advance.
